Brown Trout color pencil drawing

Brown Trout on Brown

This is a test drawing I worked on of a brown trout I caught last summer. I used color pencils for the drawing then scanned the image into photo shop and adding the background and effect for the final.
I will be using this style for a final drawing in the near future. I like the effect of the brown paper with the color pencils. I hope you enjoy tis one. I do!

Brown Trout Dark Ale

What the trout drink in Finland!

I just designed a label for some future beer that needs to be brewed!
I spent some time coming up with a new beer label. I spent a few days on and off designing this beer label in Illustrator.  Lets see maybe it will end up brewed into a real bottle!

River snow shoe adventure

Trip to the river

Well Saturday I packed my bag and stuffed the snow shoes into the car and took a drive down to the river. I unpacked my winter cloths put on some dry socks and strapped on the snowshoes. I had to take a bit of a walk (only 2.5 km one way) to the river were I was parked, but the sun was shining and the sky was blue so I was not disappointed. The scenery was beautiful as I walked. The crisp air and crackling snow was a relaxing felling.
I took along my camera with my wich was a good idea with so many unique possibilities to shoot. The walk sure warmed me up in the -15 celsius weather. so much that I thought I would have to stop and change some of my sweaty clothes.
When I finally made it down to the river I took a peek over the ledge to see what I could see. What I saw was a clean clear running river with a few trout darting away from me. I guess I was the first person to surprise them this time of year.

The spot where the two trout took off up the river!

Well at the river I spent some time sitting and staring into the water waiting for some more movement below the water. But I could not spot anything else, and my bottom was starting to get a little cold from sitting on the cold white stuff!

As I turned around and looked down the river I noticed the sun setting fast between the trees. So I set up for a nice photo of the setting sun between the trees.

Sun Burst

After standing and watching the sun set for a bit (We dont get a lot of sun in Finland in the winter so when you see it you enjoy it as much as you can) I decided I better pack up and head back to the car before the sun was below the horizon and the cold setting in. I still had that 2.5 km walk ahead of me!

With the long walk back through the snow and the wind blowing into my face I finally made it back too the car and reflected back on the great decision I made to head outdoors instead of sitting at home on the couch! I can't wait for it to warm up!

A few mayfly imitations for the spring!

Well I was busy last week tying up a few new flies for the spring and summer. Lets see how they do. I am looking forward to the new fishing season as the winter has been running a little long for me. I have not even been down to the river yet this year. I think I might go do some snow shoeing this weekend along the river and see what is happening. That is if the weather warms -15 celsius is not that great for warm fingers and toes. But if the sun is shining then that will make things better. And the exercise will not be a bad thing either!

Rainbow Trout • Finland 2010

This is another piece of art work I have done with the subject matter being another trout. This time it is a color pencil drawing of a rainbow trout.  I drew and colored the trout out on paper then scanned the drawing into the computer and added some halftone and fine adjustments to the overall image. I hope you enjoy this rainbow trout.

Brown Trout on Blue

A recent piece of work I did for the blog. You might of noticed a smaller similar piece of work at the bottom of the page. This is a halftone image with blue water color paint of a beautiful brown trout I caught from my favorite river!

Frost on the river

Porvoo river.  Lahti, Finland

This is a photo of the  local Porvoo River running through the city of Lahti. The river is not the best fishing river in the area. It runs through the city including the wast treatment area but the city has begun a restocking program with rainbow trout and are in the process of cleaning up the river. They have taken out the weirs and created natural rapid habitats for the trout to live in. The river contents many species of fish so one is not sure what you will catch. I have caught rainbow trout and brown trout. Pike is also very common in this river. I think this spring I will try out this river a little more and see what it has to offer.

Where I do the tying

Keeping things out of the way and tidy! (My tying desk)

I thought I would post for you to see how I have my tying bench set up in my house. My set up is such as I can keep everything out of sight (which pleases the wife. She is not a clutter person.) and this also keeps the kids from getting into the hooks and feathers.
All I need to do when I want to start tying is open up the doors and pull down the table. This takes only a few seconds and is just as fast putting it away. With this cabinet I can keep everything I need for tying from tools, feathers, fur, hooks and my fly tying reference books. It even holds my wireless lane router modem and my server for my computer back ups.
With the nice look and size it fits easily into any room in your house.
Let me see what you guys have for your tying bench. Send me a post of your desk!

Getting ready for the spring!

"Fly Fishing is a little difficult this time of year."
Temps starting at -10 dropping down to a chilling -20 celsius at times.

Welcome to FIN CAN FLY!
This blog will focus on my experience with fly fishing in Finland. With me being a fly fisherman from Canada I will give you my views on how things are done with the Finnish culture in fly fishing. This blog will be a little slow until the spring when the snow begins to melt and the fish come out to play. As Finland is mostly covered with the white stuff until April. Until the action starts I will post some photography from the past year as well as my paintings and illustrations.
Now it is time to go and do some fly tying!
